Musicians
have always played an important role in Breton life and this is reflected in their
pottery. One plate features a pair of Breton musicians, one with the biniou and
the other with the bombarde. These fellows are clad in traditional, colorful Breton
costumes. The second plate features a young Breton couple dancing to the music.
Their costumes are richly colored and exquisitely detailed. Both plates have a
tinge of pink from the clay that was used in the Henriot faiencerie on the day
they were produced. This is a classic pair! The plates are 10" in
diameter and priced at $350 each.
A
magnificent jardinière, just perfect for your collection. The rippled body
of this piece is trimmed in yellow & gold and bordered with a band of blue
décor riche. Yellow ajonc blossoms are on either side of the central panel,
front and back. On one side the panel features a Breton reclining on the grass
playing his biniou. On the other side we find a large spray of ajonc. A rare mark!
There is a barely noticeable hairline on the front right. 13.5" long.
C. 1945. Signed "Vichy 736" $350.
Bookends
are so very popular with collectors perhaps because they can be used with little
chance of accidents! This petite fille was created by J. E. Sevellec in the 30
s. 5" tall. A very desirable and sweet form. From the Henriot faiencerie.
$350.
Breton
figures are cleverly integrated into the form of this butter keeper from the Malicorne
faiencerie. Look for the Breton couple at the top! Many lovely shades of blue!
8" long and 6" wide. Signed "D". $395.
Oh
so very French! Decorated with the fleur de lys (symbol of France) and the
ermine tail (symbol of Brittany) this 6" tea/coffee pot has it
all. The undulating form must have been a challenge to the potter and surely is
sought after by collectors. Produced by the Grande Maison HB in the early 20th
century, today it is looking for a home in your collection! A bargain at $350.
The
Grande Maison (HB) produced this lovely tulipiere near the end of the 19th century.
It is marked only "HB". A finely crafted form and a carefully painted
piece so typical of the period. 5.5" Tall. $150.
Called
a "soliflore", this Malicorne vase is meant to hold a single blossom
and it features a sweet Bretonne in a country landscape. Notice that the handles
are mermaids! 8.5" Tall. Signed "D" "303".
$250.
Malicorne
again! In a village not far from Quimper there is a small Dutch settlement. Not
surprisingly, they have cultivated fields of tulips. One could fill this lovely
"tulipiere" with real Dutch tulips. The French seem to have all sorts
of vessels for their flowers! The décor is lovely and done with great care.
Signed "PBx". 4.5" Tall. C.1910 $175.
A
young Breton couple, painted in shades of blue, is featured on this jardinière
from Malicorne. An especially lovely form, the body is gracefully curved and decorated
with blue ermine tails and fleur de lys. Signed "PBx" C.1900.
7.5" long. $350.
We often see dragons,
lizards and similar reptiles on the faience of Quimper and this is a very popular
example! So collectable - a male on one side, a female on the other. 7"
tip to tip. Signed "Henriot Quimper France". C. 1930. $250.
This gracefully shaped jardinière
just begs to be filled with flowers! Here, a typical Breton scene is featured
on the front and a delicate floral spray on the back, Handles are in the form
of leaves while the border resembles a cord. A simply beautiful piece. Understated!
Signed "HB Quimper". C. 1920. 13" Long. 4" Tall.
$695. A great price for a lovely piece!
The
Henriot faiencerie produced this fish platter and decorated it lavishly with a
Breton wedding scene. It is a very popular piece, especially when bordered in
the rich blue décor riche pattern. The wedding procession is led by a pair
of musicians, one playing the biniou and the other the bombarde. (We see these
fellows often in various scenes). Next in line are the bride and groom, followed
by family and friends. Note the village children and a young man looking for a
few stray coins have gathered to watch. The platter is 18" long
signed "Henriot Quimper". C. 1930. $795.
